  1. Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy or more
  2. commonly known as mad cow desease is a 
  3. disease of cattle, allied to scrapie in 
  4. sheep, which attacks the nervous system, 
  5. causing aggression, lack of coordination, 
  6. and collapse. It was first identified in 
  7. 1986, it is almost entirely confined to the
  8. UK. By early 1994 it had claimed 115,000 
  9. British cattle, as well as some domestic cats
  10. and a few exotic mammals in captivity. The 
  11. source of the disease has been traced to 
  12. manufactured protein feed incorporating the
  13. rendered brains of scrapie infected sheep.
  14. Following the ban on the use of offal in feed
  15. in 1988, the epidemic continued, indicating 
  16. that the disease could be transmitted from 
  17. cows to their calves. Despite official 
  18. assurance, there is concern that consumption
  19. of beef products or contact with sick animals
  20. may give rise to CJD. Of over 200 deaths from
  21. CJD in the UK from 1990-1996, 22 occurred in
  22. farmers or others who had worked with 
  23. livestock. In the early part of 1996 a
  24. European beef ban was put into force as new
  25. cases of CJD has been reported in humans.
  26. In July 1996 scientists at the Institute of
  27. Animal Health reported the possibility that 
  28. sheep may also be infected with BSE.
